What is a Well Pressure Tanks?
A water well pressure tank is used to provide a consistent pressure and flow of water into your house or other areas where water is needed.
How does a Well Pump Pressure Tank work?
As water is pumped from the well into the pressure tank, it compresses the air in the tank which is sperated from the water by a high quality rubber diaphragm membrane. Once the pressure reaches a preset level, typically between 40 to 60 pounds per square inch (psi) the water pump shuts-down. When someone turns on a faucet, the stored up air pressure in the tank forces water throughout the plumbing until the pressure drops to the preset pressure trigger level, usually between 20 to 40 psi. This triggers the water pump to turn on as needed, and water is then drawn into the house and tank. Once the faucet is turned-off, air pressure builds back up until it is restored to the default pressure shut-off level. The term “drawdown” is used to define the amount of water delivered by the well pressure tank between the time the pump shuts down and the time it starts again.
What size of Well Pressure Tank do I need?
Well Pressure Tank size and the drawdown time will depend on the amount of water the well pump can draw into the home in 1 to 2 minutes. There are some tanks that hold as little as 10 gallons, while others have a capacity of more than 200 gallons. The most common size of pressure tanks in residential homes has a capacity around 44 gallons, These tanks have a typical drawdown of about 16 gallons. If your home uses more than the average amount of water or has a well with a low yield, a larger pressure tank may be needed.
